Museum and Independent Curators
Large museums have many curators, with each assigned to a specific art discipline, including prints and drawings, photography, painting, sculpture, visual art, modern and contemporary art, decorative art, fine art crafts, architecture and design, textiles, cross disciplinary platforms, performing arts, film and video, and new media. In smaller museums, one curator might handle all disciplines. A curator’s job is multifaceted. In addition to curating exhibitions, responsibilities can also include overseeing a specific collection, and writing catalog essays and other exhibition support materials. Museum curators plan exhibitions sometimes as far in advance as four years. In addition to selecting artists for solo exhibitions, curators arrange thematic group exhibitions that often feature the work of many artists. Curators also arrange traveling exhibitions. Independent curators are freelancers and work on a consulting basis for corporations, art galleries, museums, and alternative spaces.
